Hair Loss
Hair loss, or baldness, refers to a loss of hair from part of the head or body. Typically, the hair on the head is affected.
Common types include male-pattern hair loss, female-pattern hair loss, Alopecia Areata, and a thinning of hair after a shock, known as Telogen Effluvium.
Male or Female Pattern Baldness/Hair Loss is by far the most common and affects a large number of people across the world.
According to the American Hair Loss Association:
• Approximately 25 percent of men who have hereditary male pattern baldness start losing their hair before the age of 21
• By the age of 35, approximately 66 percent of men will have experienced some degree of hair loss.
• By the age of 50, approximately 85 percent of men will have significantly thinner hair.
• Male Pattern Baldness is due to a combination of hormones (androgens) and a genetic predisposition
• Male Pattern Hair Loss is also known as Androgenetic Alopecia and is characterized by a receding hairline and hair loss on the top and front of the head
• Female Pattern Baldness results in thinning hair on the mid-frontal area of the scalp, and is usually less severe than in males
This inherited trait, pattern baldness, that tends to give mostly men, but also many women, a receding hairline and a thinning of the front hair, is caused by genetic sensitivity to a byproduct of testosterone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
